Ain’tcha Got No Roolz?

As a fairly new arrival at the soon-to-be-greatest site on the planet I was wondering if we should have a discussion about rules.

I noticed we have some new but very dear old friends joining in and a little clarity might be good for all. If there has already been a post about rules/guidelines just steer me there and I will shut the fuck up. But in order to have a proper insurrection/resurrection I thought maybe we could discuss etiquette or establish that we refuse to have any. I’ll throw forth a couple of examples:

Should we wait an established period of time after someone else posts before posting something new, thereby giving that post enough time to gather views/comments?

Should we discuss the image guidelines? You know so we don’t all begin posting Brazilian fart porn?

Does anyone want to handle a specific topic or theme? I’ve noticed BallsofSteelandfury has the awesome AFL thing going and I’m starting to do some food items. I claim no exclusivity and anyone can do food I just don’t want to step on any toes.

Should we have only “X” number of posts a day?

Should each author have a set limit of weekly posts? I don’t want to start overposting because I can be a verbose/prolific motherfucker.

What are the established categories?

Can somebody teach me how to embed an image into the body of the post for fucks sweet sake? * (update)

Or as Walter Sobchak would say “Smokey, this is not ‘Nam. This is bowling. There are rules”.

* Oh. Got it.

What say you my esteemed colleagues?

  1. Well, I think if we let everyone make booze posts, this would just turn into a booze blog, and I’m okay with that.

To answer the question a little more seriously, there aren’t any rules right now as far as I can tell, and I think we probably shouldn’t adopt any until we discover a need for them. I’m coming at this from the perspective of someone who rarely feels he has something good enough to post, though, so I can’t completely relate to the fear of overcontributing.

      1. I think the phrase “Don’t be a dick” should be on display on the future home page.
        Great life lesson.

  2. Is there a way to set up some sort of time lapse or post lockout? In case two authors attempt to post around the same time? I’m green on all of this so if this seems like a dumb question then DDUUUURRRRR…

I’m cool with the culture right now. Don’t be a dick should be fairly easy seeing as how some of us here made it through an entire FF season without an assassination attempt.

  3. I really am not a fan of telling a bunch of anonymous internet people what to do, so whatever works for me. As for the beer posts, whoever/whatever/whenever. As our ancestors once said … http://i.imgur.com/7fcnooH.png

Also, are you aware that we can edit each other’s posts? For example, take a look at OSZ post below.

So if you don’t like something someone says, I guess you can edit it as you see fit.

  4. My AFL Beat will go up either on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning depending on the schedule. As for any other posts, I’ll probably do it as the idea strikes me and I have time. I’m OK with checking to make sure no one is posting at the same time, but I honestly don’t know how that can work. I mean, if I’m working on a post, I may have the draft going over the course of two days. I do not want anyone waiting for me to hit publish.

Also, I suggest a NSFW tag if any post will have cheesecake/beefcake pics. That way, people don’t get in trouble at work. I know I threw in the Daddarios on a regular post, but they were pertinent to the plot. Did anyone object? I certainly wouldn’t want anyone to get in trouble.

  5. I think some light rules are fine. As OSZ is, I’m a big fan of “Don’t Be A Dick” as an internet etiquette guideline. I’m not sure “food” or “booze” is a narrow enough topic to leave to one kommenter exclusively, but we all have different voices and there’s a way to do a food post or a football post or a beer post in one’s own style.

While I may be right, I’m also planning to go fuck myself.

  6. Seeing as I already blew apart the “don’t step on each other’s posts” (I was composing it as you posted, I swear!), I suppose I should offer an opinion – how about all posts before 5 p.m. EST get a full hour, then afterwards it’s anything goes? So if you have a post ready to go live before 5, just check the site and make sure the coast is clear before publishing. We could extend that out; make it 2 hours or whatever. Alternately, we could have certain time slots allotted for specific things – though personally I’d rather not be tied down by that; I don’t want to have to worry about getting things out on a schedule.

    1. No worries, this was a good test.
I think that if you’re looking at the non-mobile version of the site, the banner images are enough to draw your attention to the stories so there shouldn’t be too much of an issue with concurrent posts. The mobile version has a nice scroll that works too.
      Agree with the waiting time.
I just have to adjust to writing before publishing. My current M.O. is to preview the post, make corrections and hit the “Fuck it! Publish!” button.

      I can build on this!

So are our posts always going to be time stamped, Central Time? I can adjust to that if need be.
      Great suggestions.
      Thanks.

  7. We’re pretty do-as-thou-will around here. Some folks have started up some regular articles like Balls’ AFL, Cuntler’s Beer Reviews, Sep’s But I’m a Placekicker, etc., but things are pretty flexible. I’m sure if I really wanted to do a guest beer review, I could ask Cuntler and he’d tell me to go fuck myself and then I’d do it anyway (kidding [I think]). I’d say if you want to do some food-based stuff, fuggin’ go for it. I don’t think there’s much of a threat to too many posts per day–since this is in our free time (I’m assuming), it’s likely not always going to be regular. I’d say the main guideline about this and all the rest of things here is just Don’t Be A Dick.

Embedding images in the posts: there should be an “Add Media” button somewhere when you’re creating the posts.

    1. This is all great stuff, OSZ. Thanks. I may try to edit and embed in the post.

This was pretty much what I’m looking for.

Does NSZ ever break in just to screw up the rules? More importantly can he edit? Something about that guy…

Goddamn. That was awful. I feel like such a failure and am consumed with such shame.
